A rise in courses on the internet has led to a rise of paid services that pretend to be students and do their jobs for them.
I was an avid cheater in high school. This is not a typo. I remember writing chemistry equations on small pieces of paper that I sealed to the bottoms of my dress shoes with transparent tape. I could see the information I needed as soon as I crossed my legs.
This was before the advent of online education. It seems that cheating has taken over online education. Today, freelancers and entrepreneurs openly advertise services to help students cheat online educations. These digital cheaters are able to assume the identities of students and then take full online classes.
I reached out to No Need to Study to inquire if the company could host an online English Literature course for me at Columbia University. I received an email from its customer-relations department, who said that they could help me get a ringer so I could take the online course. It could also guarantee that my grades would be at least B. I was told that such an arrangement cost $1,225.15.
This made it appear official by adding fifteen cents.
When I asked for more information, I was reassured that I understood the company and the response was simple: "We have a pool academic tutors who can take classes and do course work for our clients."
No Need to Study even provides reference videos of satisfied customers who show how simple it was to hire someone to take their online classes. Muhammad, a customer, tells us that he hired the company in order to finish his math lab courses. He said he had taken these classes before but found the quizzes difficult. So he began searching for a solution. He said, "They got the job done, and they did really. really well." "They killed my final math and application classes with a minimum of 90 percent. I can honestly say I've never had a 90% on anything before."
Online cheating has been increasing in popularity, but it is difficult to connect the two. There is no direct correlation between the growth of online education and increased cheating. However, there are more online students which means more potential clients for cheating providers. According to the 2014 Online Learning Survey about a third all higher-education students in the U.S. now enroll online. This means that almost 7,000,000 students are taking at least 1 online class. The number of online students is a fourth of total student populations, according to other statistics. However, there are still millions of potential clients for ambitious providers who offer cheating services.
Already online education is projected to be a $100-billion global business. This could increase if online degrees have more influence with employers. Online education marketplaces could change higher education. If they can achieve the same status as traditional on-campus degrees and certifications, it could transform higher education. That is what many online education advocates want. Kevin Carey is an well-known advocate for online education.
